Alain Payot grew up in Chamonix at the foot of Mont Blanc, learned to ski there as a child, and spent a lot of time skiing in the region until he started traveling the world. Before globetrotting, however, he trained as a ski instructor and mountain guide at home, initially spending a lot of time in France and also in Patagonia.
